CH 204 Mandatory Skills for the General Chemistry Laboratory

Any version of our general chemistry laboratories must include hands-on training in the following areas as a minimum requirement.

General Lab Skills

The laboratory assignments should all work to give students experience in the following general lab skills/methods

  • Lab Safety
  • Observation
  • Basics of Report Writing & Notebook Keeping
  • Scientific Method
  • Error/Statistics

Measurement Skills

The general chemistry laboratory should train students in general measurement methods that would be utilized in near all advance chemistry laboratories

  • Analytical Balance
  • Volumetric Pipette
  • Burette
  • Volumetric Flask

Solutions

Students should become proficient in general solution techniques

  • Solution preparation
  • Standardization
  • Dilution

Separation/Purification

Students should learn basic skills in separation and purification

  • Decanting
  • Filtration

Acid/Base Chemistry

Students should learn basics of acid/base solution chemistry. These include the mastery of the following skills

  • Titration
  • Indicators
  • Buffers
  • pH meter

Qualitative Analysis

All general chemistry labs should include some component of qualitative elemental analysis

Synthesis

All general chemistry labs should include a lab on the synthesis, separation, and/or purification of a chemical compound. This lab should include quantitative analysis of yields

Advanced Skills

All general chemistry courses should include several laboratories that cover more advanced topics above and beyond the mandatory skills set such as:

  • UV-Vis spectroscopy and Beer’s Law
  • Calorimetry
  • Redox Chemistry
  • Microscale Techniques
